The Media Library also houses ZKM's Video Research Collection, with documentaries on artists, artworks, art events, and exhibitions from the 1960s to the present, as well as a series of archives that were handed over to the ZKM by artists, theorists, curators, collectors, and publishers to be developed and made accessible to the public.

Discover the Collection & Archives

Visitors to the Media Library can view or listen to a selection of works from the Audio- and Video Collection at special viewing and listening stations in the Media Lounge located on the first floor in front of the library.

The white audio chairs in the Media Lounge were originally designed by Dieter Mankau, originally for documenta VIII. The video viewing stations were created by Luc Courchesne for the opening of the ZKM in the Hallenbau in 1997.

In addition to the video and audio works that can be called up directly in the Media Lounge, further video and audio works from the ZKM | Collection and from the archives supervised by the Media Library are accessible on request.

The Video Collection can be researched online under Works. Information on the works of the Audio Collection will also be accessible shortly.

Exhibitions & Publications

Archive exhibitions in the Media Lounge and in the Media Library Balcony on the first floor, as well as DVD and audio editions provide specific insights into the diversity of the Media Library’s inventory and the archives supervised there.

Video & Audio Restoration

The Media Library continually digitizes artistic audio and video recordings that are threatened with decay. As an annex to the Media Library, the Research and Restoration Laboratory – the ZKM | Laboratory for Antiquated Video Systems – has over 300 devices that make it capable of performing high-quality digitization and preservation of nearly fifty different video formats in use since the mid-1960s.
