Paul Majkut: The Jungle and the Garden
Narratives of Indigenous Space and Globalized Space in a Neo-Colonial World
Tue, February 17, 2004 6 pm CET, Lecture Series

"If landscape is a narrative and »walking« the equivalent of reading, then in an era of unrestrained neo-liberal capitalism, the »Book of Nature«, as William Wordsworth called it, is being reinterpreted. This revision of the story inscribed in the »natural text« is the result of a struggle for control of nature itself. The notion of »space« in what is commonly called the »post-colonial perspective« which I prefer to refer to as the »neo-colonial perspective« is a contentious one. In this talk, I intend to draw on my experiences in indigenous space, the jungle, and globalized space, the institutional garden, in order to suggest a descriptive approach to this contrast". (Paul Majkut)
