The Third Dimension of Sound
Zirkonium- and Sounddome Workshop
Mon, July 26, 2010 – Sun, August 01, 2010, Workshop

The workshop „The third Dimension of Sound“ in the Atelier Elektronik during the Darmstädter summer courses will give a practical insight into options of spatialisation using the Sounddome concept. The Sounddome is a flexible multispeaker installation using the free control software ‚Zirkonium’, which was developed at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics in Karlsruhe. With this system, 40 or more channels can be moved into a flexible speaker environment using 5 to 50 or even more speakers. Inside a 16-channel Sounddome installation built into the space of the Lichtenbergschule, the students can spatialise their own composition during the workshop. Even more, they may continue to use the software for their own concerts and the creation of new spatial music. The software is not restricted to preproduced sounds. It can be connected to live electronic systems like ‚Max’ or ‚Super Collider’ to create a connection to musicians or different versions of controllers.
For active participation, students need to come with a macintosh computer and some of their own compositions. For the best results the compositions should be available in a multichannel version like a ProTools or Nuendo session. Beside of that, it is even possible to spatialise a mono sound - as in a work of Guorgy Kurtag jr. or a stereo work of Trevor Wishart, who has spatialised this work for the sounddome. Additionally, the workshop lectures will introduce the students into the topic of spatialisation, the history, the psychoacoustic context and into the compositional use of space. A few workstations could be provided to composers without a computer.
Beside of that, passive participants are welcome.
