Everything in (Dis)order?
New Complexities in a Globalized World

Anarchic financial markets, worldwide citizen’s protests, and social and political upheavals have been dominating the headlines for a long time: the current presence of the »new complexities« in a globalized world determine our lives in several ways. A vivid insight into this subject is offered by the Film Night of the »Karlsruhe Talks«, presented by ZAK | Centre for Cultural and General Studies of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) together with ARTE and ZKM | Karlsruhe.
The evening commences with the most recently produced documentary film entitled »The Domino Effect – Is the Euro on the Brink?« which poses the question as to the political significance of the Euro for the European Union. The film outlines the foregoing recent months during which the EU was obliged to acknowledge the painful fact that the financial crisis has evolved into a crisis of legitimation of hitherto unknown proportions. »For Another World« is dedicated to the worldwide civil unrest movement as spearheaded by young activists who insist on having their dissatisfaction with globalization and the associated problems heard. The documentary »Freedom or Security – the Anti-terror Fight and its Consequences« investigates the development and legitimacy of numerous anti-terror laws following the attacks on September 11, 2011, dealing with the question as to the extent to which these laws represent an attack on the fundamental laws of the population and thus to democracy. The French short film entitled »The Year 2008« narrates the difficulty in identifying the origins of global crises and sheds light on the complexity of the global system. The evening closes with the political activists Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, who combat nepotism, lobbyism and corruption: The film »The Yes Man Rule the World« uncovers the negative results of globalization and the free market with provocative parodies.
