Fri, December 11, 2015 – Sat, December 12, 2015, Symposium
The program of the symposium focuses on current perspectives of acoustic urban planning.

More than half of the world today lives in cities; designing urban living spaces is becoming increasingly relevant. Up to now, visual criteria have been crucial for town planning decision processes, while sound potentials on the other hand are not used adequately. The symposium deals with the question of which sound design options can have a positive effect on the quality of life in cities.

A transdisciplinary discourse is suggested for this: Specific aspects of the perception of sound in urban space are discussed on the basis of current methods and results from the field of research of sound studies and psychoacoustics. Urban planners, architects and acousticians will also present approaches of urban sound design and town planning incorporating the latest technology. Sound artists and musicians are presenting works, in which urban sound environments are the focus. The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics (IMA) will also present a newly developed web applications, on the basis of which future sound scenarios can be designed by users.

The symposium addresses both scientists and urban planners, as well as sound artists and musicians, who incorporate site-specific aspects into their work. The speakers will be Sven Anderson, Sam Auinger, Seckin Basturk, Peter Cusack, Dorothea Kalogianni, Thomas Kusitzky, Francisco López, Brigitte Schulte-Fortkamp, Valerio Signorelli and ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics.
