Workshops

After visiting the exhibition together, the pupils can deepen their impressions in practice, and in this way directly work through what they have seen and experienced.

In our museum studios or media workshops, we focus, in small groups, on subjects and artistic media directed at current exhibitions as well as school type and school grade. Special points of interest can be emphasized by prior consultation.

Alongside the subsequently described subjects, we also offer workshops on the Camera Obscura, drawing, painting or collage on request.

Please register yourself and your class at least seven days prior to your desired date.

Cartoons Away!

Duration: 3 hours
If images, forms and objects are to be seemingly brought to life, the cartoon offers fascinating techniques and inexhaustible expressive potential. At the focus of all this are, above all, classic techniques of animation, such as digital cartoon or stop-motion. But painting on folio and glass is also a technique which may be offered as part of the workshops; through these means pupils may create their own poetic-aesthetic images which they can then compose into an artistic cartoon.

Robot-Ticks

Duration: 3 hrs.
How are robots programmed and how do they experience their environment or even respond to it? We try out the robot programs with the Lego Mindstorms software in small groups. To this end, we have many sensors and building blocks available for »teaching« the small machines painting or dancing. Based on the principle of »learning by doing«, through the playful and creative treatment of intuitive program language, numerous connections can be made to the MINT subjects and artistic teaching areas can be extended as well.

No Words (Needed)

Audio workshop
starting from class 5, duration: 3 or 4 hours

Sounds surround us every day. We don’t just orient ourselves with our eyes, we also respond to our environment on the basis of sounds. in contrast to images and films, we perceive sound in a much more direct and unfiltered way.

In this workshop we create short stories without the use of language using sound only. In this respect, we get to learn what is meant by »space« and »stereo« and immerse ourselves in a world of acoustic composition technology.

Workshops on individual ZKM_exhibitions

In the following workshop formats, the participants enter into an intensive dialogue with the corresponding exhibitions and are able to experiment creatively with the media, technology and content of the current works of art and exhibition items, and gain their own experiences.

Young Art – New Media at a Glance

At the exhibition entitled »Hybrid Layers«

for school year 7 and above, duration: 3 hours

The exhibition highlights the recent positions and new forms of expression in digital media art and also sheds light on influences from the fields of technology, the internet and social networks.

In the workshop, the school students experiment with a variety of forms of media-based expression such as projectors, iPads and field recorders and put their creative impulses to the test, including with the original works in the exhibition.  The potential, opportunities and limits of media art are discussed, and the internet and social media are taken as the founding basis for artistic ideas.

Audio, visual and inter-media realisations of both analogue and digital works of art are created which are finally put on show.

New images of women - creative story telling

in the exhibition »The Feminist Avant-garde of the 1970s«

for school year 7 and above, duration: 3 hours

The artists in the »Feminist Avant-garde« movement asked radical new questions about society, the world of art and the roles of women.
In this workshop, we link the contents of the exhibition with the everyday life of young people and their contemporary images of women, which we then address on an artistic basis.
Instruction is provided in the use of creative tools for photography and/or video messaging. Images of women are researched and shaped with the help of new media.
In this respect, web applications and freeware apps from the »social web« play a key role, such as »Instagram«.

Let's play!*

in the exhibition »ZKM_Gameplay«

For school year 7 and above, duration: 3 hours

The cultural influence and scientific power of computer games have experienced a huge increase in importance over the course of the past decade alone. »ZKM_Gameplay« shows these developments and presents the computer game as a medium which has discovered its independent self-awareness and is entering into a phase of reflection. It offers all visitors playful access to the fascinating world of the computer game. The exhibition is interactively designed which means the games can be played during the exhibition. A »Let's Play« video is also presented with each game which shows how the game in question works. »Let's Play« is now a big trend among gamers and has become a key part of video gaming culture. In small groups, we will develop, hold and build on our own »Let's Play«.

Coding with »Calliope mini«

in the exhibition »Open Codes. Life in digital worlds«

for school years 3-7,  duration: 3 hours

Programming (coding) is a new trend at school which provides pupils with the possibility of gaining technological knowledge and practical IT skills in a playful way so that they can apply them in the working world of tomorrow. In this workshop, taking a gradual approach, the pupils learn how to understand programming languages and with step-by-step guidance to address the various code modules on a creative basis.
In the practical part of the course, creative projects are designed using the »Calliope mini«, an experimental board for children, such as the making smileys light up.
The contents of the workshop with the »Calliope mini« micro-controller board are adapted to each school year.

Writing cryptocards – teaching cryptographs

in the exhibition »Open Codes. Life in digital worlds«

for school years 3-10, duration: 2 hours, free of costs

Everything which is used these days for encrypting data is based on specific codes and cryptographic processes.

In the practical part of the course, selected encryption processes are presented, with pupils in the initial school years learning about the Caesar process, for example. Depending on their age, the pupils are then shown more complex methods, such as the cipher encryption process »XOR« or digital signatures such as »DSA« or »RSA«. The goal of this workshop is to encode a postcard text with the use of these techniques.

In this workshop, the pupils learn about, use and gain a better understanding of the basic principles, mathematical processes and techniques behind the encryption of computer systems using cryptography. The contents of the workshop are adapted to the school year.

Sonic Pi – composing music with live coding!

about the exhibition »Open Codes. Life in digital worlds«

for school year 10 and above, duration: 3 hours

This is a great place to start for anyone who wanted to create music with programming code. We experiment and have fun at the same time. With Sonic Pi, the pupils learn how to create sounds and melodies which can also be changed in real time. In this workshop, the goal is to become a live code expert in the shortest time possible and to create a huge range of sounds for the purpose of personal composition. At the same time, the pupils intuitively learn a programming language and gain insights into the most basic programming techniques. No prior knowledge necessary.
