Laurens ten Kate

Biography

Laurens ten Kate holds degrees in theology and philosophy. He publishes in the fields of Christian history and theology, art and literary theory, philosophy of culture and religious studies. In 2000 he published Flight of the Gods: Philosophical Perspectives on Negative Theology (in collab. with Ilse N. Bulhof, eds., Fordham Press, New York). Recently, he published as coordinating editor Re-treating Religion: Deconstructing Christianity with Jean-Luc Nancy (Fordham Press, New York, 2012).

Ten Kate was acquiring editor of philosophy at Boom Publishers Amsterdam, where he initiated and coordinated the edition of several works by Peter Sloterdijk in Dutch. Since 2002 he is an associate professor in philosophy and religious studies, and currently an endowed professor of liberal religion and humanism, both at the University of Humanistic Studies, Utrecht. In 2016 his inaugural lecture was published, Strange Freedom: New Meanings of Liberal Religion and Humanism in the 21st Century (Sjibbolet, Amsterdam; in Dutch).
