Biography
Nelly Massera studied visual art and the history and philosophy of art at the University and at the École des arts décoratifs (ESADS) in Strasbourg (FR), at Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton, Winchester, GB), and at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She has held residencies and has exhibited in France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Latvia, India, Quebec, and the United States. She has jointly organized several exhibitions in outer suburban locations, for which she creates installations that combine video, photography, drawing, and objects. Her work is embedded in a specific social, cultural, and geographic context and interrogates the split between its everyday reality and myth, tradition, and dream. As they walk round and look at them, viewers of these works experience something like a gap, a space in which they have to construct their own experience of the forms and their meaning. In the theater, Nelly Massera creates video sequences that interact with the live performance of actors, and she runs workshops in prisons, schools, and art colleges.
