Biography

Verena Friedrich who has mainly been involved in creating media installations, addresses the issues of new or changed values or perspectives due to technology and consequent changes that affect our life, utilizing organic or electronic media.

Verena Friedrich studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Vienna and the Kunsthochschule für Medien Cologne. She was Artist-in-Residence at SymbioticA – Centre for Excellence in Biological Arts at the University of Western Australia in Perth and at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging in Cologne. Her projects are presented internationally in the context of exhibitions, media art festivals and conferences. In 2005 she received the International Media Prize for Science and Art of the ZKM | Karlsruhe, in 2011 a special mention at the VIDA 13.2. Art and Artificial Life Awards, in 2015 a recognition at the Prix Ars Electronica and a jury nomination at the Japan Media Arts Festival, in 2016 the lab.30-Award and in 2017 the Transitio_MX-Award. She has taught at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Together with two other colleagues, she currently heads the exMedia Lab (focus on DIY technologies, biological and ecological art) at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Verena Friedrich lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
