The new media have become an accepted part of our everyday lives. The ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe follows and shapes these changes in the theories and practices of art. Thirty years ago (1984) the ZKM was conceived,  four years later it was founded. Today the ZKM | Karlsruhe is a unique cultural institution with an international reputation. This publication describes the path of the ZKM from a vision to becoming a reality, and provides information about “the beginnings of the future” in a process of developing cultural policy. The authors focus on the origination and growth of the idea, Media art of the time, the art and cultural scene in Karlsruhe, and the realization of the project in terms of content and the ZKM building. The authors include well-known figures from art and culture, academe and architecture, politics and society, who were involved in the development of the ZKM and are thus able to give first-hand information. They describe this process of development and also offer many very personal impressions and experiences. This book is a historic document giving insights into the results of cultural policy that emerged from a kaleidoscope of diversity
