Don’t Ask
Wed, October 29, 2003 – Sun, November 09, 2003

The »Don’t Ask« project by Andreas Brehmer und Sirko Knüpfer deals with the extension of traditional concepts of cinematic narration. The principal player documents his movements with a video camera, thereby initiating an interplay between disassociation and convergence and estrangement and appropriation. In the context of the medial logic of an interactive film on DVD and of a linear short the artists examine the organisation of cinematic material in variable dramaturgical structures with a view to the narrative time line and narrative perspective.

In the DVD version of the project a linear film is offered on a variable time scale. The viewer influences how detailed the plot becomes as he watches and thus determines its duration. The importance of the plot thus varies in the perception of the viewer and is reflected in the extent to which the story line is shortened or lengthened. The film can also be seen from different perspectives. The film material is based on a series of modules, which can be combined on the basis of dramaturgical criteria while the film is running.
