Masterclass at the ZKM

Scholarship System for Young Persons from 14 till 18 Years of Age

On a white background there are six portraits. They are drawn by pencil and as it seems without looking at the paper. That leads to faces that appear distorted.

Together with the Friends of the ZKM, the Museum Communication initiated the »Masterclass am ZKM« student scholarship program in 2014.
This one-year scholarship is aimed at students aged between 14 and 18 from secondary schools with an academic focus in the city of Karlsruhe and the surrounding area. A jury of ZKM employees and members of the sponsorship association select six scholarship holders from the applicants, and these six will receive the opportunity to get to know contemporary art movements and the ZKM’s program through the course of a school year. As part of this interaction, they will experience media-literate support from the ZKM – especially in the sectors of analog and digital photography, sound and video – and will then have the opportunity to create a piece of artwork themselves. Experienced artists and curators will be by your side as mentors, who will be able to support and advise you with their expertise.

This scholarship focuses particularly on talented students from educational facilities with a strong academic focus (a Gymnasium in Germany). These students will have experienced little or no artistic encouragement to date and would like to gain access to an art institution or deepen their interaction with art.

The results of the scholarship holders will be presented to the public at the end of the school year as part of an exhibition in the ZKM.
