Biography

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht is the Albert Guérard Professor in Literature at Stanford University. Gumbrecht is a regular contributor to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and Estado de São Paulo. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Professeur attaché at Collège de France, and a Professor Catedratico Visitante Permanente at the Universidade de Lisboa. He has received ten honorary doctorates in seven countries. Recently, Gumbrecht has been involved in the academic work of the Haute École Fédérale de Sport de Macolin (HEFSM) in Switzerland.

Among his books on literary theory and literary and cultural history are Unsere breite Gegenwart (Suhrkamp Verlag, Berlin, 2010) and Stimmungen lesen (Hanser, Munich, 2011). After 1945 – Latency as Origin of the Present appeared in 2013 at Stanford University Press (German translation: Suhrkamp, Berlin, 2012).
