Under the motto »Horizons of Hope. Dawn of Devices,« SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE 2023 will light up the façade of Karlsruhe's baroque palace starting on August 16. Peter Weibel had worked on this year's edition until shortly before his death.

In 2015, on the occasion of the city's 300th birthday, Peter Weibel transformed the facade of Karlsruhe Castle into an open space for the media arts for the first time with the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELEN. With »Horizons of Hope. Dawn of Devices« in 2023, he wanted to once again give the commonalities of art and science a big stage. The program therefore also builds a bridge to his last major exhibition »Renaissance 3.0,« currently on view at ZKM.

Under the direction of Peter Weibel, the jury of the BBBank Award selected the international winning entries for this year's SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE program in December 2022 from 76 submissions from countries such as Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. The BBBank Award winner from Indonesia presents itself colorfully. With »BHINNEKA EXPRESS,« The Fox, the Folks immerse themselves in a story about how we strive for growth in the midst of rapid change.

Artificial intelligence and generative art are explored by runners-up OVERLAPPINGSTUDIO_SIMONE SERLENGA in their show »AI + GA« (Artificial Intelligence + Generative Art). »For headlights crave hindsight too« is the name of the production by Cluster Kollektiv from Karlsruhe, which won 3rd prize at the BBBank Awards. Here, the Karlsruhe castle is perceived by sensors and its shape and texture is detected in a pulse-like manner. This creates a projection surface for an autonomous ride, which is accompanied by an AI-generated sound. Also awarded third prize was SÍNOCA from Spain. In the projection mapping »HUMANITY« they try to create sustainable balance between digital technologies, machines and humans. With »80's Flash«, the Hungarian studio Maxin10sity will also present a new show.

A special attraction will be Kraftwerk's projection mapping, which will be projected onto the castle facade during the already sold-out concert on August 12. During this year's SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE season, selected excerpts will be on view.

We cordially invite you to the premiere on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 in the Karlsruhe Schlossgarten!

    »BHINNEKA EXPRESS« The Fox, The Folks, 2023

    Winner, 1st place, BBBank-Award 2023

A kaleidoscope of cultures: the winning entry for the BBBank Award 2023 uses 2D drawing techniques to show a non-European perspective on social change and cohesion. The train serves as the leitmotif, making the rapid changes brought about by globalization palpable. The projection mapping is inspired by the Indonesian maxim »Bhinneka Tunggal Ika« — »Unity in Diversity.«

    »AI + GA« OVERLAPPINGSTUDIO_SIMONE SERLENGA, 2023

Winner, 2nd place, BBBank Award 2023

This poetic show plays with the intersections of natural science, artificial intelligence, and human thought. The windows of the castle liquefy with the help of artificial intelligence – AI – and generative art – GA – before melting into clouds and enveloping the castle in a colorful mist. What can be seen here would not have been technically possible just a few years ago!

»For Headlights Crave Hindsight, Too« Cluster Collective, 2023

Winner, 3rd place, BBBank Award 2023

How can we design a future in which humans and algorithms share spaces with sensitivity? Karlsruhe-based Cluster Kollektiv takes us on a breathless audiovisual tour from the perspective of a self-driving vehicle. With the aesthetics of LIDAR sensors, glitch art, and a fast-paced electronic soundtrack, this contribution reflects on the beauty of error and malfunction.

    »HUMANITY« SÍNOCA, 2023

3rd Place, BBBank Award 2023 Winner

A digitized and networked society promises endless possibilities. However, information overload, increased speeds, and virtual worlds also overwhelm us time and again. How can we use new technologies without losing sight of people? »HUMANITY« by SÍNOCA dreams of a world in which we give more space to our emotions.

    »80s' Flash« Maxin10sity, 2023

The 1980s were marked by a revolution in popular culture. Walkman and game consoles dominated leisure. Music and consumer goods reflected global fashions, and with home computers, computer technology conquered the private sphere. At the end of the decade, the fall of the Berlin Wall promised the dawn of a new era. In »80s' Flash,« the Hungarian collective Maxin10sity recalls the pop and colorful decade of the 1980s.

    »KRAFTWERK« Kraftwerk, 2023

At their sole concert in Germany, Kraftwerk's performance will be unique in the band's history: on August 12, 2023, at and in front of Karlsruhe Castle. The performance in Karlsruhe is the result of the long-standing friendship between Kraftwerk lead singer and keyboardist Ralf Hütter and Peter Weibel. An excerpt from the program will be on show at the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELEN 2023. The soundscape improvises from the band's oeuvre and underscores the pioneering work of the Düsseldorfers.

»We are data – In memory of Peter Weibel« Lyrics by Peter Weibel, audio by Peter Weibel and Hotel Morphila Orchestra, visuals by Nikolaus Völzow and Bernd Lintermann, 2023.

In his famous song »Wir Sind Daten,« Peter Weibel erected a musical memorial to the whistleblowers Bradley (now Chelsea) Manning and Edward Snowden. The song was recorded in 2013 with Peter Weibel's band Hotel Morphila Orchester at a legendary performance in Krems, Austria. On March 1, 2023, the then director of the ZKM | Karlsruhe and longtime curator of the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE passed away at the age of 78. Now his singing can be heard once again in front of the castle. In memory of Peter Weibel, Nikolaus Völzow has adapted the music video for large-scale projection.
