Collection

The library's collection includes over 80,000 books and digital media. In addition, around 120 journals and four newspapers are subscribed.

As a museum and university library, the main topics are focused on contemporary art; especially media art and theory, philosophy, film, photography, product and graphic design, scenography, architecture, curatorial theory and practice, performing arts, theater, electroacoustic music, and literature. The collection also includes numerous artist monographs and exhibition catalogs. Furthermore, the library has a large collection of titles in languages other than German.

The library's entire collection is open and systematically shelved in order to allow for searching for literature directly at the shelf. Computer workstations are available for viewing digital data carriers and accessing online databases and the Internet. The library also takes care of several archives and estates owned by the ZKM and the HfG.
