In his digital works, the Turkish-American media artist Refik Anadol explores the creative capabilities of artificial intelligence. Using machine-learning algorithms, the artist – who has been closely connected to the ZKM for many years – transforms large datasets into fluid visualizations. The result is abstract imagery known as “AI Data Paintings,” composed of moving lines, surfaces, waves, or swirling forms with a hypnotic effect, which the artist describes as visualizing the dreams of machines.
The work Machine Hallucinations – Satellite Simulations: B is based on a dataset of more than two million images captured and recorded by space telescopes from the International Space Station (ISS), the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Magdalena Ridge Observatory in New Mexico. Processed through GAN algorithms into dynamic forms, the images invite viewers to reflect on the potential of AI – not only as a tool for imitating the world, but also as a means of creating new perceptual spaces that extend beyond reality.
