What does it mean when machines have dreams? What happens to poetry when it is no longer written solely by humans, but also by artificial intelligence? Can AI agents be creative? THE SCREEN poses these questions through three artistic positions that address current developments in artificial intelligence. THE SCREEN creates a new format in the ZKM's Atrium 8 – a place that brings international media art to life and at the same time invites visitors to linger and socialize.
THE SCREEN is an 8.5 x 6 meter LED wall on which works by Refik Anadol, Sasha Stiles, and works developed specifically by ZKM artists will be presented over a period of six weeks. At the center is an 8.5 × 6-meter LED wall spanning two floors, on which three artistic positions dealing with artificial intelligence from different perspectives will be shown every two weeks.

Turkish-American artist and designer Refik Anadol is a pioneer in the field of data aesthetics and machine intelligence. With his immersive data sculptures, installations, and performances, he redefines the connection between media art, architecture, and technology, making the ubiquitous but invisible data spectacularly visible and tangible.
Sasha Stiles
A LIVING POEM (2025)
March 28 – April 10, 2026
Kalmyk-American poet, language artist, and AI researcher Sasha Stiles is also breaking new ground with her practice: she uses AI as a co-author in the writing process and, with her AI alter ego Technelegy, explores what it means to be human in the age of artificial intelligence.

Agent Provocateur (2026)

The work Agent Provocateur, conceived especially for THE SCREEN by ZKM artists and developers Daniel Heiss and Marc Schütze, offers visitors the opportunity to participate in the creation of a media artwork. This new work for THE SCREEN focuses on so-called AI agents: programs that can perform tasks autonomously on behalf of users.

THE SCREEN invites you to linger in the atrium, take in the works in a special atmosphere, and engage in conversation. Drinks will be served during the evening openings from 6:30 pm to 10 pm by a bar from the mint Café.
