Giga-Hertz Award
In cooperation with the experimental studio of SWR Freiburg, the ZKM | Hertz-Lab presents the Giga-Hertz Award for electronic music. It is dedicated to the world-famous physicist Heinrich Hertz (1857–1894), who taught at the end of the 19th century at the Karlsruhe Technical University (now KIT) and discovered electromagnetic waves there.
The Giga-Hertz Award is endowed with a total of 20,000 € and divided as follows: The main Giga-Hertz Award for life's work, endowed with 10,000 €, is determined by proposals from the members of the jury. Two further internationally oriented Giga-Hertz Production Awards, each endowed with 5,000 €, serve to initiate and promote new projects and are aimed at sound artists and composers of electronic and electroacoustic music as well as mixed music. The application for a production price is usually possible between February and March each year.
In_Sonic
In_Sonic is a showcase for cross-genre artistic discussions with new media technologies and innovative artistic concepts that are developed in lectures, practical demonstrations, concerts and live performances. The thematic focus is on machine learning algorithms in space- and time-based media, data sonification and visualization as well as algorithmic processes for spatial sound generation. In_Sonic took place for the first time in 2015 as part of the GLOBALE and from 2018 onwards will be held every two years in alternation with the next_generation festival by Hertz-Lab. The next edition of In_Sonic will take place in 2020.
next_generation
The next_generation festival has taken place at the ZKM biennial cycle since 2005. It was initiated with the intention of bringing university and non-university studios into contact with each other and thus promoting the exchange between the different approaches of university studios and young composition students of electronic music. Through a series of concerts, installations and a symposium lasting several days, participants will have the opportunity to present their own works to a broad and interested audience and to exchange ideas at a scientific level.
Each edition of the festival has a current thematic focus, ranging from contexts such as »music in space« from the early days to the areas of immersion or sensory perception in recent times. The issue in 2019 focused on »Live Coding«.
Studios of electronic music or comparable institutes interested in participating in a festival can be added to the mailing list by sending a message to next_generation@zkm.de. In the spring of each festival year, the festival's responsible persons will send out a registration and information package.
