WOLVES AND THROATS brings together one of the most significant vocalists of our time, Elaine Mitchener (MBE), with percussionist and sound ethnographer Pedro Almiro. Mitchener explores the full range of the voice within a dense field of electronic sounds. Almiro crafts a composition from self-recorded wolf howls, immersing us in the choruses of this species. Together, they create a visceral ritual about human and non-human vocal cords, about choir, collective, and howling as lament.

The new ECO/EXO cycle translates central areas of tension in the present into immersive sound spaces and combines ecological fragility with speculative, extraterrestrial perspectives. Both artistic positions use space as an active compositional element working with multi-layered electroacoustic processes. The concert contrasts two different approaches to material, perception, and time. Together, the works open up new perspectives of listening between body, environment, and imagination.

Audio-visual documentation of the concert evening will be provided by the artist Valentina Parati.

  1. Quando os Lobos Uivam

    Pedro Almiro

    "The howl
That eerie way and by far the most significant call of all animals
    The howl
The disembodied sound that gives shape to so much of our terror
One after another, never on the same note, never for the same length of time
All voices different yet eternally unchanged"

The language and music of the wolves
    Robert Redford

Quando os Lobos Uivam is a fictional choir inspired by the collective howling of the Iberian Wolf, intentionally showcasing more-than-human forms of expression. Using mainly field recordings of this species, the work challenges borders between what is human musical composition and the intrinsic musicality of the natural world. All recordings were generously donated by the biologists and members of Grupo Lobo, Portugal. This interdisciplinary collaboration started in 2025, motivated by an attempt to gather audio recordings of a previously unrecorded small group of wolf packs located in the region of Beira Alta, isolated from the larger populations of wolves in the north of the country.

    Fixed Media, 20min.

  2. Are ‘friends’ Electric

    Elaine Mitchener

New works for voice and tape, fixed media and electronics, to include works by Jessie Cox, Laure M Hiendl, Yvette Janine Jackson, Loré Lixenberg, Amadeus Julian Regucera and Corie Rose Soumah.

    Live Performance, 40min.
