In recent musical compositions the structuring of sound no longer occurs in time, but in space. Space is understood as musical parameter, which is possible to design as three-dimensional sound.

Artist and scientist Markus Noisternig introduces the foundations and technology of ambisonics and wave-field synthesis: each is a system with which sounds can be three-dimensionally projected into space. The potential pros and cons arising in the creative treatment of these systems are discussed with Ludger Brümmer, Director of the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics.

Markus Noisternig works as a scientist at the renowned IRCAM Paris, where he is currently pursuing research in the field of spatial acoustics. As an artist, he has participated in numerous collaborative projects with well-known composers and ensembles of New Music which have performed in key European festivals.
