Hyewon Son

Biography

Hyewon Son was born in Mokpo, South Korea, and grew up in Seoul. In her childhood, she learned the traditional instruments gayageum and geomungo as well as the traditional vocal music jeongak. As a gayageum player, she gave several concerts in Seoul from 2000-02. After studying composition at Kyunghee University in Seoul, she moved to Germany and completed both her master's degree and Meisterstudium in composition with Prof. Dr. Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. She is currently studying for a master's degree in electroacoustic composition with Prof. Ipke Starke at the Leipzig University of Music. 

In 2023, her fixed media composition Dust (2022) was selected as a semi-finalist in the Petrichor Records competition. Hyewon Son gives guest performances in several countries, including Korea and Germany. Her pieces have been performed in Seoul, Grassi Museum, ZKM | Karlsruhe, Freiburg Drehorgelfestival, Internationals Drehorgelfestival Leipzig, John Cage Concert Days, Freiburg Artists Exhibition, Paris-Sorbonne University and presented at the Impuls Festival. She is a member of the Ensemble Contemporary Insight.
