Every moment, men around the world die because they did not go to the doctor or went too late. The MOVEMBER movement takes this as an opportunity to raise awareness of men's health every November. In his performance at ZKM, Thomas Funk from the MUNICH MOVEMBERISTS lets us look cancer squarely in the eye and makes it clear: looking away is no option.
What started out as a regulars' table bet between Australian friends has developed into the world's leading men's health charity: the MOVEMBER movement. Since 2003, the movement has been raising awareness of men's health issues every November, funding more than 1,250 projects around the world. MOVEMBER challenges the status quo, shakes up men's health research, and changes the way health services reach and support men.
Thomas Funk initiated the MUNICH MOVEMBERISTS in 2021. He is not only a team captain and curator of many events, but has also been affected himself since his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2023. His personal mission is to sensitize men to go to the doctor in time – and not just when it's too late.
In his performance at the USEUM Space at ZKM, Thomas Funk gives cancer a face and enables visitors to look cancer in the eye... for 65,000 seconds. That's one second for every man diagnosed with prostate cancer in Germany this year.
