Open Hertzlab: Arsenic Ballerinas
Fri, February 14, 2025 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm CET
Artistic research is invisible for a long time - things are broken until we find out how they work and what we do with them.
Experience technology, music and sound art up close: in the ‘Open Hertzlab’ we give you insights into the current state of our research once a month. Our guest artists from the ZKM | Hertzlab talk about the projects they are currently working on. We also invite groups to tinker, screw and learn new things together with us.
This time we explore make-up instruments that sounds, with Ioana Vreme-Moser.
Arsenic Ballerinas explores the mineralogy of lipsticks made from the same ingredients as early radio hardware. From deep mines, and cosmetic salons to extended wastelands, this workshop examines how toxicity spreads from our lips to the machines we use. Entangled with bad morale, heavy metals, radio demodulation and amateur transmissions, we will peek into makeup histories to transform lipsticks into sound generators.
What electronic, radioactive, and semiconductive potencies are found in cosmetic complections, and what stories do they have to share? And even more so important: Is Lipstick a semiconductor?
The workshop will take place from 3 to 5 pm. After that, there will be time to exchange ideas. No prior experience in electronics is required.
