Dealing with the problematic legacy from the land reform/castle seizure and other confiscation contexts at the Dresden State Art Collections since 1945.

Among the most difficult mortgages that museums in the former GDR brought with them into German reunification are the many thousands of works of art from the so-called Schlossbergung and from other confiscation contexts in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) and the GDR until 1989. The talk addresses this problem, which has not yet been conclusively resolved, from the perspective of the Dresden State Art Collections. Until 1969, their holdings also included two works from the von Welck donation, whose expropriation in 1945 will be placed in a wider historical context.

Dr. Thomas Rudert, provenance researcher / collection historian, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden
