In the TURNS series, the ZKM explores the boundaries between music, performance and media art. This year's ZeitGenuss Edition features bodies, sound and images in motion, raising questions about identity, communication and perception.

better me

Concert at ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Kubus, 6 pm

'better me' explores the increasing desire for self-determination and self-presentation that defines our society. Everyone wants to be heard, seen and noticed, and they fight to live according to their own ideas. 'Better Me' artistically depicts the quest for autonomy, rights and justice, and the consequences thereof. The boundaries between improvisation, performance, electronics, percussion and the performers' own compositions become fluid.

eyes entangled

CONCERT at ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Kubus, 8:30 pm

In terms of content, “eyes entangled” ties in with a key theme of the ZKM Hertzlab, a research platform at the intersection of media arts, science and society. Under the title CONNECT, the focus is on building trust and shaping interpersonal relationships in an age where contact is increasingly mediated by technology. The compositions of 'eyes entangled' explore this theme artistically, examining alienation and new forms of communication through projections, visuals, and electroacoustics. In Carola Bauckholt's piece 'Oh I See', for instance, a pair of eyes is projected onto two balloons that form part of the musical ensemble. The interplay of image and sound creates a face whose expressions offer room for a wide variety of associations. The composer writes, 'I am always fascinated by the human brain, especially the logic of our dreams. I have the impression that art, especially music, comes closest to the processes that take place in our brain”.
