Organized Crime – The Shady Side of Globalization
Sat, February 06, 2010 8 pm CET, Film Screening
Criminal networks have been operated on a global scale for quite some time. They form a huge underground economy that endangers international security. The film night, co-organized by the ZAK | Zentrum für Angewandte Kulturwissenschaft and Studium Generale des Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) together with ARTE and ZKM | Karlsruhe, explores the theme of the 14th Karlsruhe Talks in dynamic and moving images: “Das dunkle Business der ‘Ndrangheta’” shows how a rural mafia goes global and exerts international economic and political influence, while the film “Handelsware Mensch” exposes the working methods of international people trafficking. “Wirkstoff Profit – Die Medikamenten-Mafia” investigates the million-euro market with fake pharmaceuticals, while “OLAF, übernehmen Sie! Europas Betrugsfahnder” accompanies the staff of the European Anti-Fraud Office. Finally, the prize-winning feature film “Kurz und Schmerzlos” by Fatih Akin describes the path of three young men from petty crime to organized crime.
