Public Science and the New Media

The Role of Web 2.0 Culture in the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge

Sat, December 03 – Sun, December 04, 2011

InsideScience, the project sponsored by the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on public science in centers of collaborative research (SFB), focuses on testing novel forms of disseminating scientific knowledge. InsideScience also seeks to hold good to the promise contained in the name: the aim of the project is to advance the dialog between science and society. Aided, in part, by animated films, the process of science and knowledge will be visible at first hand. For the dissemination of film contributions, among others InsideScience untilizes a "semantic network", and thus creates a study-oriented knowledge space.

InsideScience also transfers the concept of a knowledge space to the museum context. In the interactive terminals, museum visitors are given the possibility to quite literally step into the knowledge space. During the convention "Public Science and the New Media", participants will present the results of InsideScience so far. The thematic range extends from the role of the museum in the communication of science, via mediatization and ethics through to the significance of semantic networks for the dissemination of knowledge. Empirical studies are presented, as are legal aspects. During the convention, participants will be given the opportunity to view the interactive exhibit, and to step into the virtual knowledge space there.

On Saturday, 3 December, at 8 pm InsideScience will be screening the science films produced at KIT.

Students, doctoral students and other interested parties are cordially invited. Dr. Caroline Y. Robertson-von Trotha is director of science. For the comprehensive program, as well as the InsideScience Blog, in which all project participants communicate via blogs on specific themes in their research, and for further information, please refer to: www.kit.edu/inside-science

InsideScience participants are: Center of Collaborative Research 588 "Humanoide Robots" and TR9 "Computer-aided Theoretical Particle Physics", ZAK | Center for Applied Cultural Science, General Studies, as well as the Service Unit Press, Communication and Marketing (PKM) at KIT.
