Reading »rot« Again

The art publication in curatorial practice

The series rot was published by Max Bense and Elisabeth Walther-Bense from 1960 to 1997. It comprises more than 50 issues and has published artists and theorists such as Haroldo de Campos, Friedrich Hegel, Ernst Jandl, Georg Nees, Aloisio Magalhães, Hansjörg Mayer, Franz Mon, Charles S. Peirce, Dieter Rot, Mira Schendel, Timm Ulrichs and many others.
The seminar at the Institute for Art and Architectural History at KIT combines art historical research with archival and curatorial practice. In the course of the seminar, students will work on the art and cultural scene of the 1960s and 1970s with a focus on concrete/visual poetry, using the estate of the philosopher, publicist and translator Elisabeth Walther-Bense and its partial collection for the Edition rot. The aim is to communicate their own art-historical research (also using archival primary sources) as part of the exhibition at the ZKM. The collaborative conception, planning and realization of the exhibition is the essential part of the seminar. The students take on all possible and necessary curatorial tasks and thus gain a comprehensive insight into curatorial practice and the independent realization of an exhibition. In addition to archival practice, all aspects of conservation are also taught.
