As part of the TURNS concert series, the ZKM | Hertzlab presents two works that translate artistic research and contemporary technological developments into sound.

With “Superposition Composition”, Jia Liu introduces an artistic-scientific experiment that transforms the quantum mechanical principle of superposition into a musical form. In quantum mechanics, a system can exist in multiple states simultaneously until a measurement is made and one state becomes fixed. Repeated measurements generate probability distributions that shape the audible process of the piece. This final concert renders these invisible dynamics perceptible within an immersive sound environment.

“Dear Quantum” by Edy Fung focuses on the notion of true randomness in quantum computing – in contrast to the merely simulated randomness of classical computers. Quantum fluctuations control radio signals and generative, non-tempered music in real time. A spoken text accompanies the sonification and asks whether quantum processes might offer an alternative narrative to a present shaped by classical computing and artificial intelligence.

The event is part of the thematic cycle SOUNDING OUT CONNECTION (September–December 2025) within the TURNS series, which opens up new perspectives on sound, collective experience and experimental musical forms.
