Francis Wittenberger, Sukandar Kartadinata: musical building blocks
Wed, July 31, 2002 6 pm CEST, Lecture

Francis Wittenberger and Sukandar Kartadinata will present their project »musical building blocks« that was developed with the support of the ZKM. The work allows the users to playfully explore musical structures, and to intuitively learn about the complex principles of composition. Based on a system of cubes, the complete spectrum of audible sounds might produced to which composition principles of various degrees of complexity can be applied, resulting from the number of elements the user chose to select for his construction. The combination of haptic and visual elements with which to spatially construct musical arrangements establishes a new mode of composition that makes the world of musical structures and acoustic principles easily accessible for users of any age.

The artist Francis Wittenberger [*1967] works in the fields of film, photogrpahy, painting and computer-based art. He was an artist-in-residence at, for example, the ZKM⎥Karlsruhe and the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt, Germany. The computer scientist Sukandar Kartadinata worked at internationally renowned institutions like, for example, the STEIM in Amsterdam, the ZKM⎥Karlsruhe, and at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies [CNMAT] Berkeley, California.
