Electronic music is an increasingly important part of the musical scene, being heard more and more often at festivals and concerts. There are now many excellent courses in the field at German higher education institutions.

As the largest music publishing house in Germany, the ZKM has taken the initiative to promote discussion among academics and between them and studios outside the higher education system.
next_generation offers more than the usual concert circuit. Young composers and their teachers will give seven concerts, and alongside these a three-day symposium provides an opportunity to discuss the works performed and to explore and analyse the new aesthetic tendencies of the young generation. It also offers a chance to discuss curricula and the question of quality assurance in higher education.
With next_generation, the ZKM_Institute for Music and Acoustics hopes to strengthen the connections between academic studios, to encourage new directions, especially in electro-acoustic music, and to promote exchanges between the individual institutions.

On the occasion of the next_generation festival, the WebRadio of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für elektroakustische Musik (DeGeM) (German Association for Electroacoustic Music) will be launched at 8pm on Friday 10 June 2005.
