Haralampi G. Oroschakoff: The Battenberg Affair
Thu, July 03, 2008 7 pm CEST, Reading
Haralampi G. Oroschakoff will read from his book “The Battenberg Affair”. The book recounts the story of Gawril Oroschakoff, who is brought up on his father’s estate, Oroschanka, in the Ukraine, and makes the acquaintance of the first Sovereign of Bulgaria, Prince Alexander von Battenberg in 1879.
Through the latter, Oroschakoff is dragged into the diplomatic and political entanglements of his time, which by no means remain confined to the Balkans. “The Battenberg Affair” develops into a great historical panorama, in the “conflict of cultures” that links history and stories, in a masterful re-evaluation of the intellectual topography of South-East Europe.
