The concert entitled “Hear Red”, is performed by four contemporary composers each of whom distinguish themselves by their unique arrangements in electronic and instrumental elements. In this concert, the high-energy drumming ensemble DRUMMING – Grupo de Percussão, from Portugal, and the virtuoso contra bassist Edicson Ruiz of the Berlin Philharmonic assume the performative and instrumental part, while the composer is himself responsible for directing electronic sound.
“Medusa”, by Ludger Brümmer and “infrarot”, by Achim Bornhöft complete this richly varied and vibrant concert program. Furthermore, compositions by Matthias Ockert and Luís Antunes Pena will be recorded at the ZKM for CD production, and released by Deutsche Musikrat and Villa Concordia Bamberg.
Luís Antunes Pena’s compositional work pivots on an analysis of the computer and diverse forms of instrumental and electronic resynthesis as method. “Red in the Noise” forms part of a group of works concerned primarily with the aspect of noise – noise as sound or noise as information. For Pena, through its inherent qualities, sound is also rhythm. The composer has been resident at the International artist’s house Villa Concordia, in Bamberg since April 2010.
One of the central ideas of the composition “Continuous Open Flux”, by Matthias Ockert was to apply spectral delay techniques as a compositional starting point. The drummers use the “filtered” and transformed scores of the contra bass and vice versa: through this there emerge forward floating, interweaving musical energies.
Achim Bornhöft “Infrarot” for four drummers and 2-channel-pass (1999) 13’26’’
Luís Antunes Pena “Im Rauschen Rot [Red in the Noise]” for contra bass, drum quartet and electronics (2010)
Ludger Brümmer “Medusa” for 2 drummers, 4-channel-pass and video (2000)
