In cooperation with the film festival INDEPENDENT DAYS, ZKM will show independent short films in the Media Theater.

The focus of the INDEPENDENT DAYS | Karlsruhe International Film Festival (IDIF) is on independent film productions (short films as well as documentary and feature-length films) from all over the world. As a platform for film students as well as professional filmmakers, the INDEPENDENT DAYS offer a stage for great film works realized with little financial means outside of large film studios and TV studios. This enables a genre diversity that many large film producers and TV stations, especially in Germany and Europe, shy away from. Thus, the INDEPENDENT DAYS present a film program that reflects the entire spectrum of independent cinema. Part of the festival is also awarding the best films.

As a partner of INDEPENDENT DAYS, ZKM will also show a selection of films in two themed slots at 7 and 9 pm on Thursday, September 23. The entire film festival takes place September 22–26.

Program at the ZKM Media Theater

7 pm | UNDERGROUND AWARD Cinematic Reflections

The independent film scene in particular has never shied away from engaging in film language experiments. New film techniques, uncomfortable narratives or creative confrontations with the medium itself, and always with the freedom of the artistic avant-garde, the filmmakers in this short film programme deal with the most diverse thematic fields and social issues. Documentary formats can be found here as well as experimental animation techniques and fictional narratives. This program is shown within the frame of the the Karlsruhe – Creative City of Media Arts label.

9 pm | INDIERAMA Indian Shorts

Karlsruhe maintains diverse relations with India, especially with Pune. Culturally, too, there has been an exchange for several years, so that INDEPENDENT DAYS has once again put together a program of short films that proves once again how diverse Indian Bollywood film culture is. Stories about an impoverished flute maker (»PILIBHIT«), a paper maker who has to face her past (»Seeped«), an old artist who has to sell his house (»The Miniaturist of Junagadh«) and about the sufferings of an oppressed wife (»The Scapegoat«). The program is supported by the Karlsruhe Economic Development Corporation.
