Book presentation & film screening

The visionary artist, theorist and curator Peter Weibel has shaped the art world and the ZKM for decades. Now we invite you to celebrate his life and work with us on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Peter Weibel, who died unexpectedly on March 1, 2023, a few weeks before his departure from the ZKM, was a key figure in media art and theory. He dedicated almost six decades to his vision of expanding the boundaries between art, science and technology in favor of new ways of thinking. As a board member of the ZKM, he was instrumental in realizing an institution whose groundbreaking themes and formats appeal to both local people and a global audience.

We cordially invite you to join us in remembering a courageous and generous man. With his passion for constantly exploring new areas of research and testing new formats and passing this knowledge on to society, Peter Weibel continues to lead the way today.

»Die Aufgabe der Kunst besteht darin, Türen zu öffnen, wo sie keiner sieht.« (Peter Weibel)
(The task of art is to open doors where no one sees them.)

    6 pm, Foyer: Book presentation

The evening will focus on the presentation of two publications conceived by Peter Weibel but now published posthumously, which provide an insight into his multifaceted theoretical and artistic work.

The sixth volume of the »Encyclopaedia of Media« (original: »Enzyklopädie der Medien«) - a series of essays by Peter Weibel - will be presented. The collection of texts is dedicated to the topic of »Theory and Media« (original: Theorie und Medien). This final volume in the series explores the question of how the media(-arts) constitute, simulate and change the world and our perception of it. The texts collected here emphasize the social relevance of media art and its potential to enable an emancipated approach to digitalization in the 21st century.

The second publication offers the first comprehensive overview of Peter Weibel's diverse artistic practice over the past sixty years in English. »Peter Weibel: Art as an Act of Cognition« was conceived on the occasion of the exhibition »respektive. Peter Weibel«, which was shown at the ZKM in 2019 and at the MMCA in Seoul, Korea, in 2023.

The publications can be purchased on this evening - together with a small surprise. The ZKM store will be open until 10 pm.

7:45 pm, Media Theater: Movie night

The film evening shows a selection of Weibel's works since the 1960s. Video artworks, documentations of performances, appearances with his band Hotel Morphila Orchester and television debates create a portrait of an imaginative artist and intellectual.
