Biography

1954-1957Apprenticeship as a decorative and poster painter in Gelsenkirchen
1957-1960Studied at the Folkwang School in Essen
1960-1964Stayed in France
1962First solo exhibition in Le Havre
1967Gave up painting and worked with the element of water to visualize processes of time and space
1969-1976Sculptural actions and primary demonstrations; from 1971, performance art and photo series, body art, action art, and spatial installations
1974Began teaching at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. Founded an interdisciplinary class with sculptors, painters, filmmakers, and photographers
1978Spent an extended period in Australia
 Teaches in Düsseldorf and lives in California on his cactus farm
