Biography

Werner Sobek is an architect and advisory engineer. As a successor to Frei Otto and Jörg Schlaich, he heads the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart. From 2008–2014, he was also the Mies van der Rohe Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Beyond this, he has taught as a guest professor at numerous universities in Germany and abroad, including in Graz and Singapore and at Harvard. Sobek is the founder of the AED Architecture Engineering and Design interest group in Stuttgart, and has chaired it since its inception in 2003. He is also one of the founders of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Sobek cofounded the Stuttgart Institute of Sustainability (SIS) in 2011, and has since served as its President. Since 2012, he has also been a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University, and since 2013 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Center for Culture and Technology Research (IZKT).

Werner Sobek has received a large number of national and international prizes and honors for his work.
