This year, too, the ZKM will offer — all day long, free of charge — insight into the numerous exhibitions at the two ZKM | museums and the ZKM | Media Library as well as an overview of the diverse activities during this anniversary year. Twenty years after the founding of the ZKM, one thing remains the same: everything is different. Let yourself be surprised!
Especially the ZKM | Institutes are offering varied views behind the scenes. For example, the ZKM | Institute for Visual Media will give a filmic presentation of examples of its works and research projects, while the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics will allow a look into the “backstage” area of the ZKM_Cube and the music studios. In addition, special "music tours" will be offered through the exhibition “YOU_ser. The Century of the Consumer,” during which several of the musical works produced at the ZKM can be discovered. Also the ZKM | Laboratory for antiquated video systems will present itself with guided tours during which one can see, among other things, the extensive collection of video technologies. Along with the major family workshop “Roboter and Roberta,” Museum Communications will give visitors the opportunity to participate in spontaneous performances and gospel aerobics. Supplementing the brief guided tours, the exhibitions can be rediscovered in an unusual dialogue with our guides, and naturally we invite you to the museum rally, a favorite of young and old alike.
Also possible at the “Open Museum/Gallery Day,” last but not least, is the opportunity to encounter a number of the ZKM staff members quite personally. For one, in action on site, and for another, captured in photos in the exhibition “ZKM1:1.” Also the annual panel discussion will be held, this year on the subject Return of Religion?

Presently, two diagnoses of the era are circulating: the loss of meaning and the return of religion. Do the two necessarily contradict one another? What role does the medial side of religion play in answering this question? And where can we fit the current atheism debate into this context?
