Lutz Graf-Ulbrich: Nico – In the Shadow of the Moon Goddess

A multi-media reading with live music & film

Wed, April 27, 2016 7:00 pm CEST

Location
Lecture Hall

Author Lutz Graf-Ulbrich will be presenting his book at the multimedia reading with live music and screenings of very rare videos of Nico, such as her last interview, clips of the legendary »Nico-Eno-Cale« concert at the »Meta Musik Festival« 1974 in Berlin and the documentary »Nico-Icon« by Susanne Ofteringer (1995).

Someone who was really close to her shares his memories of this captivating artist – up close and personal: German musician Lutz Ulbrich (Lüül) – now Lutz Graf-Ulbrich – describes in his book the first meeting with Nico, that mysterious singer whose dark, morbid charisma has haunted fans and admirers for decades. He reports of their first meeting, how he fell in love in the 1970s and how this meeting became a stormy, on-off love affair, an artistic relationship and a life-long friendship.

Lutz played in German »krautrock« bands, such as Agitation Free and Ash Ra Tempel/Ashra and accompanied Nico through Europe, the USA and Canada in the 1970s. With Ash Ra Tempel, he contributed to the film music of the Nico film »Le Bergeau de Cristal« by Philippe Garrel and he wrote the song »Reich der Träume« for her, which she sang on his 1981 debut LP »Lüül«. In addition, Lutz organized her last concert for the »Fata Morgana – Wüstenklänge im Planetarium« festival in Berlin in 1988.

When she died two months later, he organized her funeral and later the CD »Fata Morgana – Nico’s last concert«. He was also part of the multi-award-winning Nico documentary »Nico-Icon« by Susanne Ofteringer and organized the Nico Tribute Festival »Nico 70/20« in 2008 in Berlin.

Nico aka Christa Päffgen would have celebrated her 77th birthday in October 2015.
