Modern medicine and technology help us to defeat diseases and prolong our lives. Which role do the government and our legal system play here? Which regulations are ethically and morally justifiable?
On the one hand, people strive to optimize themselves, to beautify themselves or to enhance their physical abilities. Other people are happy to be able to live self-determined lives again or continue to do so thanks to medicine and technology. Increasingly, however, perfect health in our society is becoming the benchmark on which politics, advertising, medicine and research focus. The quest for a better, longer and healthier life drives us, also with the help of digital support, whether for walking, heartbeat or electronic patient records.
These are just a few of the topics that will be discussed at the Karlsruhe Forum.
However, the topic of health also affects our rights and is not just an individual matter. The state creates framework conditions for the right to life and physical integrity, which have been the subject of some heated debate in recent months: how do we combat global pandemics? How far should the state intervene to protect the health of its citizens?
The question of the connection between dignity and health is raised, and art holds up a mirror that may inspire us to move 'healthier' in other directions. The conclusion remains: The longing for a healthy future is growing, nourished by promises that come up against ethical limits. Our society, however, has set itself high standards that must be negotiated again and again. Whether being human means being vulnerable? Or would it be a goal to strive for an all-encompassing immunity and raise it to a paradigm?
»Stay well and be very welcome to listen and join in the discussion« – Dr. Frank Mentrup, Chairman of the Board and Lord Mayor of the City of Karlsruhe.
The entire event will be broadcast as a livestream on the web and will subsequently remain accessible on YouTube and at www.karlsruher-forum.de.
