Olga Kisseleva is an artist and researcher, currently teaching contemporary art in the Sorbonne University. She is the head of Art&New Media program and founding director of Art&Science International Institute (Paris). Liu Bauer is a researcher, working in interdisciplinary research institutes. She has worked on climate, urban, mobility projects in institutes in Berlin, Utrecht, Paris, London, Moscow and Mallorca. Her recent focus is on citizen science and open city data, which she is developing at City Interaction Lab in Montreuil, France.
Cities Live Like Trees focuses on the relationship between trees and cities, their resemblance and potential for cooperation. The project identifies both the shortest and greenest journeys within cities, combining citizen science and data processing algorithms, and calculates the green index of urban mobility based on the relation between the number of trees of the given greener trip and its equivalent shorter path. Kisseleva’s collaborative research in this framework allows to investigate citizens’ behavioural tendencies, whether and how people deviate towards greener areas. Analysing and overlapping several layers of urban data, including inhabitant’s mobility patterns and locations of trees, the project maps the city through human emotion, memory, experience and location, and identifies certain trees or green areas which are deemed as key urban sites for citizen’s wellbeing and recharge. Cities Live LikeTrees aims to address the nature-lack-disorders and solastagia inherent in urban spaces, while exploring the interconnectedness of human and vegetal realms to reimagine cities’ structures and maintain them alive.
Cities Live Like Trees was developed in collaboration with SONY CSL, with the support of Vittorio Loreto, Alessandro Londei, Bernardo Monechi, Matteo Bruno, and the MAXXI Foundation, with the support of Chiara Bertini and Alessio Rosati in the framework of the Improving Urban Sustainability, a S+T+ARTS residency with the support of Institut Français Italia, Art&Science International Institute, the Centre de Recherches Interdisciplinaire and the Botanical Garden of Rome. The residency explored new ways of experiencing and navigating cities, aiming to conceive new scenarios for post-pandemic urban sustainability through big data and ICT technologies.
