- Description
- Irmtrud Saarbourg’s series of photographs »Hall Construction A (before the ZKM moved in)« is devoted to Karlsruhe’s largest building which today houses the ZKM | Center for Art and Media.
»Hall Construction A« was originally a production facility that was part of the extensive industrial complex of the Industriewerke Karlsruhe Augsburg (IWKA) (Industrial Works Karlsruhe Augsburg), which was founded before World War I as the Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabrik (German Weapons and Munitions plc). After the factory was shut down, artists were allowed to use the premises, initially with the permission of the building’s various owners. When the owners retracted their permission, the artists occupied the building. In the years 1980–1994 a vibrant cultural scene developed in the vast spaces of the vacated building, which presented »Hall Construction A« to the general public as a forum for the arts. For a time there were as many as 40 artists’ studios and workshops in the old factory building.
Irmtrud Saarbourg captures the moment of in-between — after the artists’ use of the premises and before the architectural redesigning of the building for the ZKM, which moved into the former production halls in 1997.
