»Minari« by Lee Isaac Chung

ZKM in the cinema: In the joint film series of ZKM and Kinemathek, we would like to enter into a dialog with you on social issues. Accompanying the exhibition »Sung Hwan Kim. Protected by roof and right-hand muscles«, we will be showing »Minari« by Lee Isaac Chung, a moving immigration story, on December 10. Alistair Hudson will be our guest for a discussion afterwards.

Arkansas in the 1980s: 7-year-old Korean-American boy David moves with his family to a small farm in the American hinterland. Like his mother and sister, David feels alienated in his new surroundings. When his quick-witted grandmother Soon-ja from Korea joins them, however, the two of them manage to pave the way to a hopeful future for the whole family in an unconventional way.

Lee Isaac Chung's story has won numerous film and festival awards, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe. The film was nominated for a total of six Oscars – including in the main categories "Best Film" and "Best Director".

Following the screening, Alistair Hudson, scientific and artistic director of the ZKM | Karlsruhe, will be our guest for a discussion.
