Who decides which artists are seen – and which receive little attention? Social media plays a role, but the most important and reliable source of information on the internet remains Wikipedia. This is where knowledge is created that is read and used worldwide.
At the second edit-a-thon at ZKM Karlsruhe, you can actively help shape this knowledge. Become a Wikipedia author and help give media artists greater visibility online.
What is it about?
For many people, Wikipedia is the first place they turn to when looking for information about art and artists. The aim of the edit-a-thon is to write, expand, or improve Wikipedia articles on media artists featured in the collection exhibition “The Story That Never Ends”.
The event builds on the project Media Art on Wikipedia, within which numerous entries have already been newly created or expanded. On this basis, we continue our shared work.
What can you expect?
The edit-a-thon offers you the opportunity to actively contribute to Wikipedia while learning more about the structure of the online encyclopedia. You will receive an introduction to writing biographical articles and descriptions of works, and learn how Wikipedia can be used as a tool for research and knowledge sharing.
Schedule
The edit-a-thon takes place over three days. Participation is also possible on individual days. If needed, selected program elements can be repeated in smaller groups (e.g. the introduction to the library).
Friday11 am – 5 pm | Open introduction and orientation |
Friday is designed as an open introduction day. We meet at 11 am. In the morning, there will be time to register, create Wikipedia accounts, and take first steps on Wikipedia. An introductory session for beginners will be offered, as well as time for individual visits to the exhibitions. In the afternoon, we will meet again for a guided tour of the library. Guests and support
Guests of the edit-a-thon include students from the University of Münster as well as Prof. Dr. Ursula Frohne (University of Münster, Art History), co-spokesperson of the DFG Research Group “Access to Cultural Goods in the Digital Transformation”.
Throughout the entire event, you will be supported both technically and in terms of content by experienced Wikipedia authors and staff members of ZKM.
Participation
No prior knowledge is required, but it is welcome. What matters most is an interest in research and writing, as well as bringing your own laptop.
The results of the edit-a-thon will be documented on a Wikipedia dashboard page. All participants will also have the opportunity to be listed on the project page.
