Biography

The tuba player and bass trombonist Jan Termath (*1977) lives with his wife and son in Duisburg, Germany. After studying educational science with Hans Nickel in Detmold and Münster, majoring in tuba, he spent several semesters studying bass trombone with Detlef Reimers in Münster. He then studied contemporary music at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, majoring in tuba with Melvyn Poore.

Jan Termath chose to focus on contemporary music early on in his career. Since 2000, this has led to solo performances and project engagements with contemporary music ensembles, including Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Notabu, Ensemble Garage, E-Mex, Reflexion K, and oh ton.

For many years, his focus was on founding the Ensemble consord and working as its artistic director and tuba player. In 2022, a new team took over the management of the ensemble. Since 2018, Jan Termath has been the bass trombonist in the composers slide quartet. In addition to his work with the Ensemble consord, he was also the curator of the KLANGZEIT MÜNSTER festival from 2016 to 2022 (director since 2018). Since the beginning of 2023, Jan Termath has been teaching tuba at DORTMUND MUSIK, where he has also been the coordinator for wind instruments since August 2023.
