Lourdes Fernandez
Biography
Lourdes Fernández is currently director of the Azkuna Centre for Contemporary Art and Culture in Bilbao and trustee of the Reina Sofía Museum Foundation in Madrid.
During more than 25 years of professional career she has directed a variety of international contemporary art projects. Her beginnings were as assistant director of the Marlborough Gallery in Madrid, subsequently opening the DV (Diario Vasco) Gallery in San Sebastian and directing MANIFESTA 5, the European Contemporary Art Biennial (a roving European Biennial which came to San Sebastián in 2004). She remained a member of the Biennial’s board for 5 years. Between 2005 and 2010 she directed ARCOmadrid International Contemporary Art Fair.
She is actively involved in exhibitions texts, catalogues, meetings and conferences and is a member of Unesco’s International Council of Museums (ICOM).
Until 2010 she was a member of the jury of the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts.
