Mallika Das Sutar
Biography
Mallika Das Sutar’s works are her response to the uncertainties and fragilities of the times we live in. They are often multidisciplinary and rooted in the mundane—the everyday life and surroundings—and develop through exchanges and collaborations with local communities. These works also activate ways of repairing and reviving habitats, species, water bodies, seeds, foods, and traditional knowledge, ultimately transmitting a hopeful positivity about our social and ecological future.
Since 2022, she has been working with community members from her neighborhood, especially women, and together they try to restore the lost knowledge and practices of identifying, scavenging, cooking, and eating saag or edible herbs, which were once an essential part of the daily meal in Bengali households. The artistic renderings of her research, findings, views, critiques, and propositions are multimodal: stitching works, sculptures, performances, cooking, and videos.
