Biography

The composer and creative flute player Norbert Rodenkirchen (*1962 in Cologne) feels at home both in medieval music and in new music of our times. His music builds a bridge between early music  and modern day avantgarde. He studied flute with Hans Martin Mueller and Günther Hoeller at the Hochschule für Musik Köln (today Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln) has been the flute player of Sequentia since 1996 and also works regularly with the French ensemble Dialogos directed by Katarina Livljanić. He is also much in demand as a composer of music for theater and film as well as a producer for CD projects, most of them in coproduction with the WDR/ West German Radio. Furthermore he directs the ensemble Candens Lilium, spezialized on a sounding dialogue between medieval times and today.

From 2003–11 Norbert Rodenkirchen was the artistic director of the concert series “Schnütgen Konzerte – Musik des Mittelalters” at the Cologne Museum Schnütgen for medieval art. Since 2023 he is invited to teach medieval transverse flutes at the Haute école de la musique de Genève and additionally has given workshops on medieval instrumental improvisation at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Mozarteum Salzburg, at the festivals of Vancouver and Ambronay as well as at the conservatories of Lyon, Liège and The Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. In 2020 he released his third solo CD “Medieval Echoes,” in 2021 “Carmina Burana Today” with Candens Lilium and in 2022 a live recording of his evergreen solo program “Hameln Anno 1284.” Norbert Rodenkirchen is a board member of the Kölner Gesellschaft für Alte Musik KGAM e.V., which runs the zamus, Zentrum für Alte Musik, Köln.
