Biography

Timo Heinänen, f.s.c. is a Helsinki based cinematographer, photographer, teacher and doctoral student. He has a long career working as a cinematographer in features, short films, documentaries, TV-series, TV-films and commercials. He has worked as a web designer for many film companies and held several photo exhibitions in Finland. He is a board member of the Finnish Society of Cinematographers and a deputy board member of IMAGO, European federation of cinematographers and a member of IMAGO’s educational committee. As a teacher he has recently been working as a professor of cinematography in ELO Film School at Aalto University Helsinki. He has been running several international workshops both in Finland and abroad, mainly about aspect ratios and story telling. The title of his forthcoming dissertation is »Cinematographer’s Canvas – Exploring Cinematic Image with Borders«, in which he focuses on the artistic process of cinematographers working with variety of aspect ratios. His latest workshops have concentrated on study and research fiction narrative storytelling in both full dome and 360° panorama environments.
