ARTISTS at RISK (AR) is a network-institution at the intersection of human rights and the arts. As a platform dedicated to persecuted art practitioners, the work of AR encompasses mapping and advocacy of arts professionals at risk, addressing their practical needs and advancing their artistic practice. To achieve this, carefully selected AR-Residents are granted short or longer-term temporary relocations at Artists at Risk (AR) Safe Haven Residencies. AR-Residents are invited as honoured visiting arts professionals. These are art practitioners who not only greatly enrich their host countries, but are at the heart of rebuilding their often conflict-torn countries of origin.

AR is designed as an institution of global scope. Expanding from its established residency programmes in Europe, it is welcoming new partners around the world. To date, it has developed AR-Safe Haven Residencies in 20 locations in 16 countries. AR was the first dedicated human-rights related artist-in-residency institution of its kind dedicated to the visual arts. Nevertheless, from its inception it has accepted candidates from other fields including film, theatre, dance and music. As an international network of artists-in-residencies for at-risk artists that includes close curatorial support, AR remains unique.
